A malnourished Elephant seal pup that was rescued by the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles, CA.
The Marine Mammal Care rescues and releases more marine mammals than just seals and sea lions. They also rescue whales that are entangled in fishing gear. They have been open for 35 years but the last couple of years have been hard. Seals and sea lions have been showing up mostly malnurished because the mothers are having to go out farther and longer to find food for their pups. Which as a result, the pups are left and abandoned before they are weened. That was the case with this one. Others have started showing up with illness from dimoic acid, which is a poison from red tides, along with shark bites and bullet wounds. – Kimberly Ray
